Joan Winter was born in Ft. Worth, Texas. She studied art and architecture at Texas Tech University and then worked within architecture for 10 years, most notably working for the architectural firm coordinating on the Kimbell Art Museum where she met the architect Lou Kahn. His philosophy of elevating form beyond its materiality has had a lasting influence on her work.  Winter completed her MFA at SMU Meadows School of the Arts in 1993, focusing in sculpture and printmaking.

She began exhibiting in the mid 1990’s and has recently shown her work in Kyoto, Japan and Arequipa, Peru as well as solo shows within the past three years in New York, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, and Austin. In conjunction with an international conference in Japan, she spent time in 2011 studying contemporary Japanese architecture, a continuing inspiration for her work.

Winter works in a number of different ways with shifts between sculpture and printmaking that occur gradually, one medium informing and overlapping the other. Areas of investigation include ideas of light as the inner source of form and concepts of time relative to memory, physical changes and movement in space. Her subtle use of materials includes light natural wood, translucent cast resin and handmade paper. The play between concerns of light within three-dimensional forms in space and light as a “giver of presence” is in constant consideration between her sculpture and works on paper. Her work reveals forms of physical lightness and ethereal presence.

Winter won first place in the juried exhibition Print TX, 2013 at the Museum of Printing History in Houston. Her prints have been selected for juried exhibitions by curators from the Museum of Modern Art in NY, Whitney Museum of American Art, Berkley Art Museum, CA, and High Museum, GA. Her work is in major museums, public and private collections both nationally and internationally. Most recently, three of her prints were included in the Houston Museum of Fine Art permanent collection.
